Today, I wanted to share with you a glow up guide of my journey with Gua Sha, a skincare practice that has truly transformed my skin. Originating from ancient Chinese beauty traditions, this technique has become one of my cherished rituals in my skincare routine.
If you don't know by now, Gua Sha involves using a smooth-edged tool made of jade or rose quartz to gently massage the face and neck, to help the skin to stimulate circulation and promote lymphatic drainage.
I honestly, was introduced to it by little sister Rima, who is sooooo into skincare and stuff. After I've seen results with my dry brush after she recommended it, I thought of trying the Gua Sha as well. And oh my God! what a difference! I noticed every time I wake up, my face was puffy on one side than the other. Especially because I sleep on my right side....so you can imagine, that side of the face is more puffy when i wake up because their is no drainage. Once I started using the Gua Sha consistently, I started noticing that my puffiness went down, felt my nostrils opening up and my eyebrows, nose, and jaws are more arched and chiseled.
You can read the benefits of Gua Sha online, but briefly it helps:
1. Enhanced Circulation: One of the first benefits I noticed was the improved circulation in my skin and my skin would be tighter and lifted.
2. Lymphatic Drainage: It helped to reduce puffiness and swelling, especially around the delicate under-eye area, giving my skin a refreshed appearance.
3. Deeper Product Absorption: I've read that incorporating this into your skincare routine, the serums and moisturizers were better absorbed, allowing their nourishing ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin.
4. Relaxation and Stress Relief: The gentle, rhythmic motions of Gua Sha is a calming ritual for me.
5. Reduction of wrinkles: This also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.
My Gua Sha and Facial Rolling Routine:
- I start with a clean, moisturized face, applying a few drops of my favorite facial oil to provide lubrication for the tools. (you have to use serum or light oils for this to glide and slide, we don't want any friction on our sensitive face)
- Beginning with the neck, I gently glide the Gua Sha tool upwards towards my jawline, focusing on areas of tension and tightness.
- Moving to the jawline, cheeks, and forehead, I use long, sweeping motions with the facial roller, paying extra attention to the under-eye area and temples.
- I finish with a few deep breaths and a gentle facial massage, allowing the nourishing oils to sink into my skin.
(you can search the motion and directions online for the face, it is important to follow the lymphatic drainage system)
If you're inspired to take your own journey with Gua Sha, I encourage you to start by incorporating these practices into your skincare routine 2-3 times per week. Try with different oils or serums to find what works best for your skin, and remember to clean your tools regularly to maintain hygiene. I've put the link on where you can get it like I did.
